Wax Carving
Introduction
Although this column is a marketing tool for us, our purpose is not just to blow our own horn. We also intend to inform the general consumer public of facts, myths and our educated opinions relating to gems, jewelry and the jewelry industry. We hope you will read and enjoy these tidbits of knowledge.
I carve wax. A wax carving is the prototype model which eventually is encased in ceramic, burned out, replaced with hot, liquid gold, cooled and eventually finished into jewelry. From this unglamorous side of life, comes more than 50% of my workday - carving wax.
On the more glamorous side, however, wax carving is where the ultimate beauty of a fine piece of jewelry originates. This is where the idea takes shape, where full three dimension is seen. This is my medium and I make most of my jewelry this way; by carving the original in wax by hand.
When looking for fine jewelry, seek out a good cyroplasticist.
